Murcia
lies at the southeastern end of the Iberian
Peninsula, between Andalucia, Valencia
and Castile-la-Mancha. It borders the provinces of Alicante
to the east, Granada, Almería and Albacete to the west, with the Mediterranean
Sea to the southwest. This is a
popular area with UK tourists, who come for the beautiful beaches, wonderful
climate and excellent facilities as well as the interesting
surrounding areas that are worth exploring!
La Manga del Mar Menor is a resort town, situated on the Costa Calida,
at the southernmost point of the Costa Blanca. La Manga del Mar Menor
translates as Sleeve of the Little Sea, as this fascinating area consists of a 13 mile long, 100 meters
wide thin strip of land which separates the Mediterranean
Sea from the Mar Menor and creates a
lagoon of 16 sq. kilometers and which at its deepest point is only 8 meters. Mar Menor is a popular spot for holiday makers, especially local
people from Murcia as well as keen golfers who come to enjoy the pleasant all year
round climate and play the 3 championship courses at La Manga. La Manga Golf
Club has 18 holes with a large driving range of 80 bays and is one of the
most popular clubs in the whole of Spain.
Close to Murcia Airport and the city of San
Javier is the Roda Golf
Course with 18 holes. La Manga strip begins at Cabo de Palos
lighthouse and ends at the village of Veneziola. Beyond Veneziola the nature reserve is to be found. Known as San
Pedro del Pinatar and combined with Sand Spots Regional Park, the
nature reserve has 2,000 acres
of land. It is stopping off point for migrating birds and a popular spot for
bird watchers. The strip at La Manga del Mar Menor is accessed by car, with
lovely sandy beaches on either side of the road. The area offers the visitor
many small villages and beaches to explore. The area has plenty of water
sports on offer. Sailing and water skiing courses are available and the
occasional high winds and large waves make windsurfing good. Catamaranning
is also available and there are several yacht clubs in the vicinity. It
is claimed that some of the best scuba diving are to be found here and there
are several diving center offering courses and diving trips as
well as equipment hire. La Manga has many restaurants, bars and nightclubs for
the visitor to enjoy throughout the year. There is a large market at Cabo de
Palos each Sunday where you can buy fresh locally grown fruit and vegetables,
as well as souvenirs. Mar Menor and the surrounding area hold many music,
cultural, religious and folklore festivals throughout the year.
There are cheap flights available throughout the year from most UK
destinations to Marcia’s own international airport, San Javier,
which is close to the area. Alternatively, Alicante
Airport is only an hour’s drive away, offering more frequent flights. The best way to discover the beauty of Murcia and its surrounding area is by car. Arranging to collect a hire car on arrival at either Alicante
or Murcia airport gives the visitor instant freedom to explore, whether traveling
inland to discover the unspoiled villages and towns, or searching for the
perfect beach. There are several car hire companies operating from both
airports with car rental Alicante an available option.
